What is a affiliate?

An affiliate is a person who, through his or her own affiliate link, earns a commission on products and services purchased through that link. This link belongs to the affiliate himself and only he/she earns a commission from this. For example, it could be a link to a bol.com page, if people make a purchase on bol.com via this link, the owner of the affiliate link earns money. The commission could, for example, be 30% of the total amount spent on bol.com.

The aim of the affiliate itself is to get as many people as possible to click on his link and then buy products on someone else's site/webshop. The more people buy something via the affiliate link, the higher the affiliate's income, but how does an affiliate ensure that someone clicks on his/her link and then buys something? There are different ways to do this. The most commonly used is to create a website where, for example, an article about good headphones is shown. By praising the headphones, people will become interested in the headphones in question. And now it comes, because when the reader is interested in the headphones and then sees a link to bol.com where these headphones are for sale, there is a chance that the reader will buy the headphones. The link on the website is an affiliate link and so the affiliate receives, for example, 30% of the price of the purchased headphones. For example, an affiliate earns 30 euros if the headphones cost 100 euros.

Don't be put off by the fact that you (have to) create your own website. There are many different tools that can help you with this and afterwards you will think that it is not much. It is also a useful skill that you can master additionally.

Other ways to receive a commission via an affiliate link are via social media, such as videos on TikTok, for example, where someone recommends a product and advises the viewer of the video to view/buy the product via the link in his/her bio. If this link is clicked and the product in question is purchased, the affiliate will receive a commission from the company where the product is purchased.

Affiliates are also very useful for companies, because affiliates praise their products and sell them more. As a result, they often have a large commission left for the affiliate and this is how an affiliate can earn money. Actually, it is an indirect advertisement for the company that they only have to pay for if something is sold through the affiliate. So a win-win situation!
